If you live in a sunny part of the world, then a skylight would save you a lot of heating and cooling costs, and best of all you don’t contribute to global warming. There are manual ones and there are mechanized ones you can open or shut as you please to maintain the right amount of light and heat inside a space. There are even models that have a separate shade that rolls down to shield you from the suns not rays during the hottest times of the day. If you need privacy, install those newer ones that have opacity adjustments or chose frosted glass for a diffused effect that makes the incoming light cooler to the eye.

If the closet space is under the counter, there are specific models that have wedges cut out of them to allow then to swivel flush with the corner space. You can have the cabinet doors attached to them so they look natural when stowed away not giving any clue to the huge amount of stuff they hold. Suzan’s are nice for they give you lots of storage space you can sometimes even adjust to the heights you need. Several metal shelves allow storage of heavy goods and other grocery items keeping them out of view for a clear clutter free kitchen.

Ever had a closet you never seem to fill to capacity, always half filled and with the top part serving no purpose, then you can get one of those kits that have sliding trays mounted onto the walls of a cabinet or space to allow use of that top half. Better yet, why not divide the space into three layers if it is tall and wide, you get more storage for the same space with only minimal labor you yourself could install. Another way to maximize drawers is to have those nifty wooden or plastic dividers that have several trays you can use to organize your drawer. If the drawer is quite large, then a second layer can be added with a slide out tray similar to the ones used on closets but shallower to allow them to fit in drawers.

Another choice material for modern looking closets is metal ones that have wall hangers and shelves that attach to them. The nice thing about these metal ones are that they can be adjusted to accommodate anything, need a larger space, adjust a few hangers and shelves and you have more. They are also quite expensive for they are durable and they won’t fall off or collapse if you happen to love filling your closet to full capacity. With these space savers you can reclaim space that is left in between clothes and folded articles or bags which lie on the bottom shelf allowing you to keep more and help make your room tidier.

Bathrooms don’t have to be a minimalist with many luxurious fixtures out on the market that use good materials such as brass and copper. Many of the previously lavish elements of a bath such as marble countertops and sinks can be customized to any size. When trying to lay out your fixtures use masking tape to lay them out using dimensions you took form the store to see if it hampers the door. Try to configure the shower from a corner so you maximize the space. Use large lipped sinks which can be used to store stuff. As with any space, use mirrors and skylights to allow light to play around and give it a larger look. There are also a wide variety of modular units which can be combined in any configurations that may suit the size and your taste.

There are a lot of wasted spaces in a house and one of the most neglected ones that could be given new life and of course new space is the old rectangular closet.
